Here is a snapshot of some of the different events we have offered in the past two AFLOI programs.
A Leadership session helps students to develop an awareness of what leadership skills are and how as individuals they can start to become not only an ambassador for the program but a leader within their own life. With lots of hands on activities and teamwork the group got to explore the types of leadership behaviours that were needed to be successful in life and along the way got to know one another better and make a few new friends.
Each year we tour Alcoa Point Henry. Jo Forssman (Community Relations Officer) shows us a presentation about Alcoa, what it manufactures and takes us on a personalised tour of the plant to explain how aluminium is made – you will have a new found respect for our soft drink cans!
In 2011 we were able to go to the Austech Expo held in Melbourne. Austech is the premier Advanced Manufacturing Expo for the southern hemisphere. All the best and latest wiz bang gadgetry, technology and future developments were on display.
Each year we have the opportuntiy to tour three of our supporting companies. We have been on site visits to Lyondellbasell, Boundary Bend Ltd, Air Radiators, Sykes Racing, AGB Engineering & Alcoa's Anglesea Power Plant to see how they work and what they contribute to Geelong and the world of advanced manufacturing.
A tour of The Gordon allows us to explore what eduational pathways they can provide for someone who is interested in advanced manufacturing as a career.
A Communications & Work Readiness session is held each year so students can learn about and practice communication skills for the workplace, build an awareness of employability skills and explore how personal presentation can have an impact on success.
At Deakin University in Waurn Ponds we attend a lecture on the opportunities in engineering & manufacturing. We then tour the Geelong Technology Precinct where we got to see some of the most advanced technological innovation research happening in Australia! We end the day with a look at the haptics lab and the world of robotics to see what the future holds
During the September school holidays all students have the opportunity to do work experience with one of our supporting companies. This allows you to ' buddy up' with an employer and learn from the inside what advanced manufacturing is. By all accounts, everyone has a great time and enjoys their experiences.
In 2010 we were lucky to have two local Young Industry Amabassadors from the Careers in Manufacturing program come and talk to us. Carolyn Tan from Boeing Hawker de Havilland and Daniel Mallon from Powercor took us through their personal journeys from school to what they are doing now. Both were not only entertaining to listen to but inspirational in their drive to be the best in their careers.
GRVEC would like to thank everyone for their participation in the past two programs. We enjoyed taking the journey with all the students (who were fantastic groups!), we hope the teachers who came along to all of the events not only enjoyed the days but learnt something from it to take back to their other classes and to all the people who were involved in making each event possible thank you so much.
GRVEC would like to especially thank the following 2011 & 2010 supporting companies:
| AGB Engineering | Kinetic Engineering Services |
| Air Radiators | Lakis Engineering |
| Backwell IXL | LyondellBasell Australia P/L |
| Boundary Bend Olives Ltd | Reid Engineering P/L |
| GD Manufacturing Engineers P/L | Sykes Racing |
| ICD Asia Pacific P/L | Uptime Services Management P/L |
| Industrial Control Technology (ICT) | Wathaurong Glass & Arts |

Lastly and my no means least we would like to thank Alcoa Australia, who without their support this great program would not occur.
