Work Placements

Work Placement is a term we use to describe both Work Experience and Structured Workplace Learning.
Work experience is where students are placed with an employer to learn about that industry and the workplace in general. This type of placement is about observing rather than doing, generally students are in Year 10.
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) students are enrolled in an accredited training program which focuses on the workplace or a specific industry (eg Certificate II in Automotive). This placement is about doing rather than observing, the student can be in Year 10, 11 or 12.
Both types of work placement have their WorkCover and Public Liability covered by education sectors, an Arrangement Form must be completed and fully signed by all parties before the commencement of the placement for this coverage to begin. Host employers are required to pay the student a minimum of $5 a day (exemptions apply).

Employers:
GRVEC will be liaising with employers from across a broad range of industries to seek out placement opportunities for local Geelong students. We can explain the different ways you can become involved in hosting a young person whilst they are still at school and see what best fits your business needs.
We will provide an avenue, via our Placement Web Portal, for employers to ‘lodge’ their availability to host a student. This will limit the number of direct work placement enquiries from schools, students and parents that you may currently get. This will free up valuable time for you and allow you the opportunity to accept or deny hosting a student without being directly involved in the initial request.
We understand that business pressures and activities can change over the year, we will always check your availability to host a student before committing you to a placement.
If you would like to know more about hosting a young person, please contact Kylie or Bec at GRVEC on 5222 8522 or email us on info@grvec.org.au.
If you are prepared to host a young person and want to lodge your availability please download the 2012 Availability Form here, complete the requested details and email or fax it back to us.
Students:
GRVEC will be liaising with employers from across a broad range of industries to seek out placement opportunities for local Geelong students. We will be listing these opportunities on our Placement Web Portal for you, the students, to access via your school.
Our Placement Web Portal will allow you to search for placement opportunities by industry areas that interest you, by dates you can go out on and by suburb so you can easily get to your placement.
Once you find a placement that is suitable, complete our online application form and GRVEC will be in touch with you and your school shortly after you submit your form with further details on the placement and employer. Your school will then assist you with preparing the necessary paperwork for your placement to begin.
